Lighting is Infectious

We believe this to be true. Admittedly, we have a love affair with light—light fixtures, light design and lighting in general. Lighting has infected us.

Light breathes life into any design: concert stages, theater, interior spaces and skylines. For us, it has added life to our booth at LDI, which will embody our current expression of loving light and its infectious nature. We have created a small wondrous world filled with the many ways light can be articulated, as well as a visual platform to show case our new and exciting products.

Imagine interlocked video walls made from our modular MVP™ Series surrounding a space especially created for our Q-Wash™ 560Z LED moving heads and Epix™ Series of pixel mapping fixtures. Overhead creeps a spidery truss design where our COLORado™ Zoom Tour static wash lights will hang alongside the awesome quad-colored Legend™ 412 moving yoke.

The look will ensnare you. Our infectious new products will captivate you. Get infected by light at booth 183.

Revolution Continues: Miranda Lambert

The last leg of Miranda Lambert’s tour, The Revolution Continues, has begun and with it a revved up light show from Chris Lisle. We were able to get some behind-the-scenes photos of the new stage design. On deck are COLORado™ Batten 72 TOUR linear wash lights and Legend™ 300E Beam moving heads.

Missouri trip: CHAUVET® (On the) Road Show

Blue Planet  Lighting, based in Hollister, Mo., played host to CHAUVET® Central U.S. Territory/Key Accounts Manager, Jeremy Pace, during their recent road show. Jeremy showcased fixtures such as the 2011 Parnelli Award-nominee for Indispensible Technology, WELL™ wireless uplighting fixtures, a member of Legend™ Series, our flagship moving yoke for the professional line, Legend™ 300E Spot, one of the newer members to the COLORado™ line, COLORado™ Range, and the variable white member from the SlimPAR™ Pro series, SlimPAR™ Pro VW. A big thank you to Blue Planet’s Mike Gormley for sharing these photographs.

Mexico trip: TV Azteca

Written by Mike Graham, product manager for CHAUVET® Professional

I was in Mexico for the day to show our Legend™ Series to TV Azteca. I trained them on three fixtures from this series: Legend™ 1200E Wash, Legend™ 1200E Spot and Legend™ 300E Beam. Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes shots Stéphane Gressier, global sales director for CHAUVET®,  took below.

NZ trip: Day 8, Wellington – MDR dealer night

Written by Mike Graham, product manager for CHAUVET® Professional

Get up early and drive to work. It’s almost like being at home, except I am driving on the other side of the road through some of the most dangerous roads on the North Island.  There is a safer way, but apparently the GPS I am using hates Americans enough to send me over the mountain instead of around it. All in all, the drive up the mountain was easy. Just a matter of staying in my lane and taking it easy. No problem until I started going down the mountain and all I could see was huge cliffs and water that seemed like a mile below. Needless to say, I was sweating bullets and could not wait to get down from there, but wanted to make sure it was by road, not by air.

Brodie’s license plate. Yes, he can spell, but there is only space for 6 letters.

Once I finally got to MDR, it was time to get to work and help finish up the dealer night preparations.

The sign is self explanatory.

The lighting rig consisted of the following: (2) LEGEND™ 300E Spot, (2) Q-Spot™ 160-LED, (2) COLORband™ TRI, (7) COLORado™ 2 IP, (4) COLORado™ 1-Tri TOUR, (4) COLORado™ 1 Tour, (1) COLORado™ 1 VW, (8) LED PARr 64 TRI, (1) Cirrus™ and (1) Eclipse™. (The last three are members of our club/DJ line of fixtures.) There were also one each of the COLORdash™ Accent family members, an assortment of ILUMINARC® products, as well as the popular club/DJ wash lights 4PLAY™ and 4BAR™. It was all controlled by ShowXpress™ and an Obey™ 70.

The night was hosted by MDR and Audio Progress Ltd. We had a guest from Massey University, Professor of Sustainable Energy, Ralph Sims, who discussed the effects of CO2 emissions as they relate to global warming concerns. He described what can be done to help prevent further release of CO2 and how we can lower our carbon footprint by using more efficient methods of transportation, energy production in our everyday lifestyle. He touched on the lighting industry and offered comparisons between traditional incandescent lighting and compact fluorescent lighting (CFL).

Prof. Simms speaks about green and sustainable energy.

After his presentation, I was able to expand on his discussion by going into the energy savings of LED and also include the fact that LEDs are much more flexible and actually usable in the entertainment industry where CFL is not. I then touched on the fact that comparisons between LED and discharge lamps is difficult to do on paper and is something that has to be shown in person. The crowd was very receptive to this and I think Brodie is going to get swamped with demo requests.

The presentation from offstage. We waited until it got dark to start going over the fixtures themselves.

We took a short break between the technology portion and the fixture overview and then reviewed the entire professional catalogue fixture by fixture. After the presentation, both Brodie and I were mentally exhausted.

Brodie then wanted to give me a ride around Palmerston North to show me the two outdoor installations he has worked on. There are more in the works, but for now there is the Clock Tower and Regent on Broadway Theater. The Clock Tower is lit with a combination of COLORado™ Batten 72 Tours and COLORado™ 6p units. The Regent Theater is uplit with COLORado™ 6p units only.

Five questions with Chris Lisle
Production designer for Miranda Lambert CMT Revolution Tour 2010-2011

1. What was the overall vision, theme, or message of your lighting design?
The main goal of the design was to give Miranda’s show a look that complemented her musical style, but also conformed to two major criteria: budget and truck space. It definitely made me slow down and take a hard look at what elements I actually NEEDED versus those that I just WANTED. In the case of this project, I chose fixtures that I knew would give me the looks that I was going for, and were also affordable. Miranda definitely had the final say in which of the three designs that I submitted, but she is not a micro-manager – she wants those that are around her to do what they are paid to do. So once she chose the design, the rest was in mine and Aaron’s hands. She definitely had some input at rehearsals in terms of some looks that she wanted to do, but also let us be creative as we saw fit.

2. Why did you choose the products you did?
There are different things I like I about each of the fixtures that I chose, but in the end I look at what is going to do what we need it to do within our budget. I also like to choose fixtures that are road worthy and wont end up being a repair/technical nightmare for the techs.

3. What special challenges did you run into in this design?
The biggest issue we was time. We had 28 songs to get into the console in less than a week. There were a lot of long nights and coffee involved, but we pulled it off!

4. Do you have a favorite fixture (and why)?
I became a huge fan of Legend™ 300E Beam fixtures on this tour. We use them on the floor to create aerial looks that punch through the color washes coming from the fixtures in the air. We found these lights to have great optics that allows a good concentrated beam of light. The effects wheel in them is great as well and allows for some great looks. From a technical end, these fixtures are very light weight and easy to manage!

5. What was the most rewarding part of designing this tour?
The most rewarding part of this tour was definitely seeing almost six months of work come to life. You look at a design on paper for months and months, then one day you stop by the lighting company and they have truss laid out, then the next week the truss is hanging, then a week later you are in rehearsals programming, and then the first night of the tour. It is my favorite part of the process on that opening night when it all just comes together.
